Formation

God chooses certain men to live the mystery of religious life and priesthood. When a man is called it becomes the responsibility of the Church to discern the call and initiate these men more deeply into the life of Christ through religious formation.

Our vocational ministry begins when a man fills out the "getting to know you" form on our website. We do our best to help men discern where God might be calling them through initial email and phone conversations. We invite some men to visit our community. During this time of discernment a man may be invited to join our fraternity.

When a man is invited to join our fraternity they begin the "Initial Formation" program, which consists of 4 months as a postulant and 18 months as a Novice. During this time they live on the Gila River Indian Reservation in the Diocese of Phoenix, Arizona. Initial formation is complete when they make first promises.

Following their first promises the newly professed friar continues his formation in Detroit, Michigan. The student-friars live at Greyfriar's House of Studies and commute to Sacred Heart Major Seminary. Throughout the time in the House of Studies, the friar continues formation to be a life long member of the fraternity and to become a priest. Once a friar makes final promises he will continue in formation towards the priesthood.
